Philadelphia Fight Factory product Eddie Alvarez tapped out to grappling sensation Shinya Aoki in the co-main event of the Dynamite New Year's Eve card before a sold-out Saitama Super Arena in Japan. According to sherdog.com: Alvarez stuffed a double-leg early, and Aoki chased him around the ring while butt-scooting. Realizing that the ground was the absolute last place he wanted to be with Aoki, Alvarez continued to backpedal until referee Noguchi stood Aoki up. Alvarez then delivered a middle kick, which Aoki caught and used to capture the back clinch. In response Alvarez whipped Aoki over his hip with a harai-goshi, landing on top in mount, but Aoki escaped immediately and put Alvarez in guard. The Japanese fighter then dove for Alvarez’s leg, taking the American to the mat. As neither man had worked up a sweat yet, Aoki had the adequate grip to lock on the heel hook and put away yet another opponent by the submission of choice according to the Nippon Top Team playbook. Alvarez tapped out at 1:32 in the opening frame. It's unclear whether this loss will affect his scheduled January 23 Extreme Challenge fight in New Jersey against Naoyuki Kotani.

Josh Koscheck (12-3) defeated Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-3) by KO at 2:15 of the first round last night at UFC: Fight Night 16 “Fight for the Troops”.

December 10, 2008

2007 won’t go down in Waynesburg-native and fourth-ranked welterweight Josh Koscheck's (11-3) history book as one of his favorites. Sure, there was the decision loss to Georges St-Pierre (no shame there), but there was also a victory over Diego Sanchez, so fighters have had worse 12 month periods. Yet as far as the American Kickboxing Academy fighter is concerned, what made the 31-year-old describe himself as being “the most miserable human being on the face of the Earth,” in 2007 wasn’t the quality of his fights, but the quantity. You can read the entire article from UFC.com here.

Koscheck will face Japanese stand-out Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-2) at UFC Fight Night 16 “Fight for the Troops” tonight live from Fayetteville, North Carolina, on SpikeTV.
