ATTENTION FIGHTERS: Mixed Martial Artists who participate in unsanctioned, unregulated events, or events with professional-style rules, will no longer be eligible to hold amateur status in New Jersey. This decision protects the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, but ultimately, it protects you. Amateur rules were developed to give mixed martial artists a safe and fair chance to test and build their skills. Simply stated, fighting in events out-of-state and without doctors, medical suspensions, qualified referees, etc., does not help you or your MMA career. It only defeats the purpose of your training and can lead to serious and life-long injuries. It also takes the sport of MMA backwards. And while states like Pennsylvania continue to develop rules and regulations, each of us, but especially you, need to be diligent in protecting yourself.
A statement from Nick Lembo, NJSACB: "I am not the only one concerned about these unsanctioned, unregulated events. The UFC and the Association of Boxing Commissions are also working on this. I have spoken to Delaware and New York. If you want to fight on these shows, fine, but in this litigious society, I don't want to have to watch a kid get hurt in my state and then deal with a lawsuit. The sport has evolved past the days of unsanctioned unregulated or underground events. Again, I don't want an undetected previous injury becoming my problem in NJ. I don't want to see any fighter get hurt. That is not a pleasant experience. These unregulated shows do not report results or post fight suspensions. I cannot track those fighters. In my opinion, promoters who hold these types of events avoid regulation only to line their pockets and do not care about fighter safety or the sport. I have done more than most people to build the sport at a professional and amateur level. However, we are still not at a point where I do not try to counter negative perceptions about the sport from legislators, doctors, media and the public on a daily basis."
If you are a fighter who has particpated in one of these events, you may retain amateur New Jersey status by successfully completing the professional contestant medical requirements. Refer to at least Pages 6, 7 & 8. You may also call Joan Pierce at 856.575.4835.
Any and all questions should be directed to the NJSACB at 609.292.0317.
