Fighters Ready For Pain; Make Weight For First MMA/Boxing Card In Pennsylvania
The card features fighters from some of the most active MMA teams in Pennsylvania, as well as serious independent fighters.
In the opening fight, Pat Paulo (2-1-1) of Anthracite CC in Schuylkill Haven faces Matt Nieves (2-3-0) of Quiet Storm in Reading in a bantamweight fight. Paulo is coming off a Unanimous Decision win over Claudio Ledesma on February 21, 2009. Nieves has been busy on the kickboxing circuit since coming off a loss via Unanimous Decision to Tuan Pham in an MMA title fight on August 9, 2008.
It’s Army v Marine when Kevin Mullen (0-0-0) of Triple Threat Fighting System in Sunbury faces Thomas Peck (0-0-0) of Team MMA in Honey Brook as the light heavyweights make their MMA debuts. Mullen trains under former UFC heavyweight Tim Boetsch. Peck splits his training between multiple camps.
Some 500 pounds of man do battle when undefeated Jeremiah Gaffney (4-0-0) of Team MMA in Schuylkill Haven faces life-long natural athlete Demetrius Lindsey (0-0-0) of NFSC in Reading in a heavyweight fight. Gaffney is coming off a first round win via choke over Matt Hanshue on January 23, 2009. Lindsey, a RANKED grappler, is not to be underestimated.
In a fight of aggressive undefeated featherweights, Nat Hasara (3-0-0) of Anthracite CC in Schuylkill Haven faces Eric Steppe (3-0-0) of Vicious MMA in Williamsport in a fight that could be a main event. Hasara is coming off a Unanimous Decision win over Craig Alexander on February 21, 2009, to earn the Asylum Fight League championship. Steppe is coming off a early first round win via triangle choke over Timothy Amon in the inaugural MMA in PA event on April 19, 2009.
Ben Grove (2-1-0) of LionHeart MMA in State College faces Mike Serrano (1-3-0) of Team MMA in Lancaster in a featherweight fight. Grove is coming off an early first round win via TKO from strikes over Jeremy Yoder on April 3, 2009. A game Serrano is coming off a second round loss via rear naked choke to Gregory Belardinelli on April 25, 2009.
And in the Main Event, Jim Gerner (1-0-0) of Anthracite CC in Schuylkill Haven faces Tony Williams (2-2-0) of Quiet Storm in Reading in a welterweight fight. Gerner is coming off a round two win via triangle choke in his debut against Carlos Font 2:37 of round two on December 12, 2008. Williams is coming off a loss via rear naked choke against Liam Kerrigan at 1:00 of round three on November 26, 2008.

Boxing, martial arts event slated for Sovereign Center Tickets will go on sale this morning for a May 30 Sovereign Center show that will combine boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) matches.
The boxing portion of the event, dubbed "The Pain on Penn Street," will be headlined by Reading heavyweight prospect Travis Kauffman. Injuries forced Kauffman (16-0, 13 KOs) to pull out of two scheduled May bouts, which led to him taking a fight on the local card against an opponent to be determined.
The show will include six boxing matches. Reading fighters Julio Cesar Mathews (7-0), Jason Cintron (10-0), Lucian Gonzalez (9-5-1) and Keenan Collins (12-5-2) are also penciled in, along with Reading heavyweight Craig Tomlinson, who is making a comeback after five years away from the ring.
The MMA half of the show, which will follow the boxing portion, will include 10 amateur bouts with local fighters from The Cage MMA Academy and combatants from the surrounding area.
The show was initially expected to be the first MMA card held in Pennsylvania, but another MMA show has since been put together for Sunday afternoon in York.
The promoter of the May 30 card, Marshall Kauffman, is offering a buy-one-get-one free deal for the first 500 tickets sold. Tickets are priced from $65 to $25 and are available through Ticketmaster or the Sovereign Center box office.

WFMZ-TV 69News Sports Reporter Troy Hein is covering the MMA scene in MMA coming to Reading: "It has been less than two months since the State of Pennsylvania voted to make Mixed Martial Arts legal within the states borders. The Sport is growing like crazy around the country in large part because of the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC. On May 30th, the Sovereign Center will play host to the first MMA event ever in Berks County. The Pain on Penn Street event will actually feature amateur mixed martial arts along with professional boxing. Travis Kauffman and Julio Cesar Matthews will be the co-features on the boxing side of things. Kauffman is now 16-0 with 13 knockouts in his heavyweight career. READING, PA -- King’s Promotions brings for the first time to the Reading area, a mixed martial arts/professional boxing card to be held at the Sovereign Center on Saturday May 30th. In a special promotion, the first 500 tickets sold will be buy one, get one free of equal value. “Times are tough right now for everyone,” stated Marshall Kauffman, head of King’s Promotions. “We are offering this special deal to make it easier for boxing and MMA fans to enjoy a night out and as a way of saying thanks to everyone who has supported us in our previous events.”
The hybrid boxing/MMA event will mix the two disciplines in one exciting night of non-stop action. Mixed martial arts has been enjoying increasing popularity in recent years, and King’s Promotions hopes it will be a good opportunity to introduce boxing fans to MMA and MMA fans to boxing. The boxing portion will consist of six professional bouts, headlined by Reading’s own rising heavyweight prospect Travis Kauffman. Kauffman (16-0, 13 KOs) made his national TV debut in December on Shobox: The Next Generation with a third round knockout of Malachy Farrell. Since then he scored two early knockouts over Ken Murphy and Cliff Clouser. The boxing co-feature will include Julio Cesar Matthews (7-0, 5 KOs), fresh off a unanimous decision over William Gill at the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. Also featured will be the return of Reading favorite Craig Tomlinson after a five year absence from the ring. Local crowd pleasers Jason Cintron, Keenan Collins and Lucian Gonzalez will also fight in the boxing portion. The MMA portion will consist of ten amateur bouts, featuring local fighters representing Anthracite Combat Club and The Cage MMA Academy, as well as combatants from the surrounding area, including Jvolutionary Ground Control and Vicious MMA.
